Letter from our President
February 2008

On Target – Some words from your President

Paul Farbman      Some swinging thoughts about the gate: to gate or not to gate; that was the question. It was proposed, and the membership voted to have a gate installed.

Those against the idea had some valid points: a chain without a dangerous hand crank would work just as well, and cost much less; we’ve done without one for so long, so why now?; and why do we have to “announce” our presence so blatantly?

The other side of the coin lists: someone is less likely to ram and run over an actual gate than any kind of chained arrangement—crank or no; if we get the Land Conservancy’s okay (which we have to) to spend money on a gate, the idea of them arbitrarily telling us our lease is up, is far less likely because they’ve allowed a “permanent” structure to be erected; for new members and would-be members (not to mention 3-D Tournaments,) it sure beats 4600 Palos Verdes Drive South as a landmark. For now, we have to wait till the Land Conservancy is ready to hear our question, and even if it’s approved, it’s up to the city of Rancho Palos Verdes which really owns the land. The Conservancy oversees the use of the land. I personally believe that once we have a gate, the idea of resurrecting a sign post with our name, logo, website, open/closed indicators, whatever, is a possibility that would show that we’re proud of our club. I, for one, am proud to be a member.

Keep seein' spots,

Paul Farbman
